Earmarks – Why do we need them?

Needless to say, most of us are happy to hear that “earmarks” may be a thing of the past. With luck they will stay that way and the vote buying/selling will slow down somewhat. It doesn’t make any difference who the earmarks are going to or what congress person is selling their vote, there are other ways to acquire money for deserving issues and projects. Ways of obtaining funds for worthwhile projects using a system set up to make sure funds are dispersed via proper channels. If our congress would put half as much energy into doing things right instead of circumventing the system, problems solved. Before Christmas break the Senate tried to shove a pork bill down our throats. Here is a list of the Senators and the amount of earmarks they had shoved into the last  Omnibus spending bill will cost us over a trillion dollars, it was nearly 2000 pages long, and was filled with over 6,000 earmarks. Note, it’s not JUST the Dems although if you look real close they do have the most earmarks by far.
